A Survey of Findings on the Poverty Impacts of Agricultural Trade Liberalization AgEcon
Hertel, Thomas W..
The purpose of this survey is to review the available empirical evidence on the impacts of agricultural trade liberalization on poverty – considering both the impact of domestic and international liberalization. Since trade liberalization is generally an economywide phenomenon, with tariff cuts occurring across a wide range of commodities, we do not restrict ourselves to episodes where only agricultural trade was liberalized, although emphasis in this survey is given to agricultural trade policies. Furthermore, given the difficulty of isolating the effects of trade policies alone, we will also consider the impact of other types of external shocks which have the effect of changing the relative prices of tradeable and non-tradeable goods. By examining the...

A survey of the assessments of the effectiveness of Preferential Trade Agreements using gravity models AgEcon
Cardamone, Paola.
This paper reviews the empirical literature using a gravity model to assess the impact on trade of Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) and provides a critical analysis of the choices made to carry out the estimations. With respect to the effectiveness of PTAs, the main result that emerges from the review is that PTAs tend to foster trade between the countries involved. However, two empirical issues appear relevant. First, the use of dummy variables to proxy PTAs does not adequately describe the preferences granted and can be misleading. Indeed, the use of dummies does not allow to discern among the different preferential trade policy instruments used as well as to measure the level of the trade preferences granted. As a result, dummies do not allow to...

A SYSTEM-WIDE APPROACH FOR ANALYZING THE EFFECT OF EXCHANGE RATES ON FRESH APPLE IMPORT DEMAND AgEcon
Acharya, Ram N.; Schmitz, Troy G..
This study examines the impact of changes in exchange rate and import market composition on fresh apple import demand using source differentiated import demand functions. We modify the standard Rotterdam model to incorporate exchange rate effects by revisiting Barten's fundamental matrix equation of consumer demand theory and viewing exchange rate as a "sticky" preference variable. The results show that the preference variable had a significant impact on UK but not on Malaysian and Saudi Arabian import demands.

A Tale of Three Countries: Italian, Spanish and Swiss Manufacturing Operations in China AgEcon
Gattai, Valeria.
In this paper we investigate the choice of FDI versus joint-venture, made by Italian, Spanish and Swiss multinationals in China, as shaped by the risk of Dissipation of Intangible Assets. Probit estimates, based on an entirely new firm-level dataset, constructed by the author, show that FDI is more likely to emerge when know-how easily spills over - namely for firms endowed with more Intangible Assets or belonging to high tech sectors - in line with the theoretical expectations.

A TRADE LIBERALIZATION IN INTERNATIONAL DAIRY MARKETS AgEcon
Langley, Suchada V.; Blayney, Donald P.; Stout, Jim; Somwaru, Agapi; Normile, Mary Anne; Miller, James J.; Stillman, Richard.
International dairy industries remain among the most distorted agricultural sectors. Dairy average bound tariffs remain among the highest of all agricultural commodities, and dairy trade is characterized by a large number of megatariffs and tariff-rate quotas (TRQs). The objective of our study is to examine how the international dairy markets might respond to policy changes under various assumptions, using a partial equilibrium, multiple-commodity, multiple-region model of agricultural policy and trade. Our results indicate that liberalization will reduce supplies, increase dairy trade, and raise world prices.

A TRADE NETWORK GAME WITH ENDOGENOUS PARTNER SELECTION AgEcon
Tesfatsion, Leigh.
This paper develops a Trade Network Game (TNG) that combines evolutionary game play with endogenous partner selection. Resource-constrained buyers and sellers choose and refuse trade partners on the basis of continually updated expected payoffs. Partner selection takes place in accordance with a "deferred choice and refusal" mechanism that is shown to have interesting stability, optimality, and uniqueness properties. The iterated prisoner's dilemma strategies used by buyers and sellers to conduct their trades are evolved over time via a genetic algorithm that biases reproduction in favor of strategies that have been successful in past trades. The TNG is shown to encompass a variety of economic applications, such as job search games, labor markets...

A Trade Regime for Sub-National Exports Under the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures AgEcon
Loppacher, Laura J.; Kerr, William A.; Barichello, Richard R..
Regulations relating to disease management have traditionally been an important component of the overall environment in which international trade in agriculture products occurs. The World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS Agreement) allows members to restrict or prohibit imports from a country when imported products present a risk to human, animal or plant health or life. As the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE, also commonly called Mad Cow disease in the media) outbreak in Canada showed, the disease status of a country is a major competitive advantage and losing disease-free status can impose significant costs on an industry. The risks associated with SPS-based border closures were not...

A Typical Scene: Five Exposures to Poverty AgEcon
Kanbur, Ravi.
Over the past decade, I have been involved with an “Exposure and Dialogue Program” (EDP), which literally exposes analysts and policy makers to the lived reality of poor women’s lives by getting them to spend a few days experiencing that life. After each EDP, participants are encouraged to write up their experiences in the form of “personal” and “technical” notes. This compendium brings together the personal notes I did for my five exposures.

A válság hatása a magyar élelmiszer-gazdasági külkereskedelemre nemzetközi összehasonlításban AgEcon
Hartmut, Wagner.

A WELFARE ANALYSIS OF EL NINO FORECASTS IN THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE OF FISH MEAL - AN APPLICATION OF STOCHASTIC SPATIAL EQUILIBRIUM MODEL AgEcon
Sun, Chin-Hwa; Chiang, Fu-Sung; Liu, Te-Shi; Chang, Ching-Cheng.
This study identifies the potential marine environment and economic effects of El Nino on anchovy, herring and sardine fisheries in the eastern equatorial Pacific. By considering the uncertainly of El Nino, this study used a stochastic spatial equilibrium model to evaluate the social welfare gains of 1997/98 El Nino forecasts in the international trade of fish-meal.

A WELFARE ANALYSIS OF PORT USER FEES: THE CASE OF GRAIN AND SOYEAN EXPORTS AgEcon
Peterson, E. Wesley F.; Viscencio-Brambila, Hector; Fuller, Stephen W..
User fees have become a popular means of financing public services, including certain transportation facilities. The Water Resources Development Act of 1986 includes provisions for user fees to finance part of the costs of operations, maintenance, and new construction of the U.S. port system. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the welfare implications of this legislation. An analytical model is developed and used to estimate the impact of port user fees on grain and oilseed producers, consumers, and the government. The results of the analysis indicate that the user fee has a relatively small effect on producer welfare and that the efficiency gains resulting from the replacement of the government subsidy for port operations, maintenance, and new...

--------------------------------------------------- Spain is one of the largest fruit and vegetable producer country in the EU, which has preserved its competitive edge...
